RainShield is utilizing the following technologies on building envelope design and assessment work to assist our clients in their engineering related needs and endeavors.

WUFI : WUFI is a state-of the-art program which allows realistic calculation of the transient coupled one-dimensional heat and moisture transport in multi-layer building components exposed to natural weather. It is based on the newest findings regarding vapour diffusion and liquid transport in building materials and has been validated by detailed comparison with measurements obtained in the laboratory and on outdoor testing fields.

THERM : THERM is a steady-state computer program developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Using THERM, we can model two-dimensional heat-transfer effects in building components such as windows, walls, foundations, roofs, and doors; appliances; and other products where thermal bridges are of concern. THERM's heat-transfer analysis allows you to evaluate a product’s energy efficiency and local temperature patterns, which may relate directly to problems with condensation, moisture damage, and structural integrity.

MOISTURE CONTENT SURVEY DEVICES : The wood moisture meters work on the principle that the wood resistance decreases, as the moisture content in the wood increases. The decrease in the resistance is converted into digital data and the moisture meter displays the percentage of water in the wood. The moisture meter consists of two electrodes, which are inserted into the wood, to find out the resistance between them and hence its moisture content. For example, GE Protimeter, Delmhorst Instrument Co. moisture meter, etc. RainSheild will use various moisture content meters to assist our building envelope condition reviews.

WATER PENETRATION TESTING : The method for water penetration of windows, skylights, doors (and roofs, decks, exterior wall, cladding, flashings, and mass wall assemblies) are in general accordance to the ASTM E 1105, E 331, E 2128, AAMA 502, AAMA 503, AAMA 511 standards. The procedure includes water leakage testing along with interviewing the building occupants / owners / tradesmen / contractors, etc, reviewing drawings and specifications (where applicable), surveying the building components, and performing exploratory openings. This test utilizes a spray rack (meets ASTM E 331 & 1105 Calibration tests and AAMA 502-02 requirements) to apply water to the exterior surface of the wall, window, or other test area. Areas to be tested are isolated by systematic positioning of the spray rack and/or by careful masking off the wall components. This test method covers the determination of the water resistance of test site or test area to water penetration when water is applied.

AIR INFILTRATION TESTING : Standard Test Method for Field Measurement of Air Leakage Through Installed Exterior Windows and Doors. This test method provides a field procedure for determining the air leakage rates of installed exterior windows and doors. The test method can be adapted for the latter purpose, provided the potential paths of air movement and the sources of infiltration and exfiltration can be identified, controlled, or eliminated. This test method attempts to create a given set of natural environmental conditions.

INFRARED SURVEYS : Moisture intrusion can devastate a structure as it can foster mold, promote decay and will often times attract termites. Infrared thermography can locate hidden active moisture in building materials. In addition to moisture detection, infrared is used in a multitude of other construction defects such as electrical deficiencies, mechanical maintenance, insulation voids, concrete voids in structural columns, etc.
